Daniel Gallego-Perez, PhD, FAIMBE, FBMES, FAHA
Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Surgery · Edgar C. Hendrickson Chair in Biomedical Engineering
Biography
Daniel Gallego-Perez is a biomedical engineer and scientific innovator whose research focuses on non-viral gene delivery, cellular reprogramming, and regenerative medicine. He is a Professor in the Departments of Biomedical Engineering and Surgery at The Ohio State University, where he holds the Edgar C. Hendrickson Chair in Biomedical Engineering and directs the Center for Advanced Nanotherapeutics within the Gene Therapy Institute.
He earned a BS in Biomedical Engineering from the Antioquia School of Engineering and a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from The Ohio State University. Following postdoctoral research in nanoscale science and engineering, he joined the Ohio State faculty in 2015 and was promoted to Professor in 2024.
His laboratory pioneered Tissue Nano-Transfection (TNT), a non-viral platform for localized genetic programming of cells and tissues. The research integrates nanotechnology, cellular engineering, and translational medicine to create new approaches for vascular regeneration, neurological repair, peripheral nerve injury, metabolic regulation, and tissue healing. The lab also develops engineered extracellular vesicles and targeted nanocarriers as therapeutic platforms.
His contributions have been recognized with the NIH Director’s New Innovator Award, the Charles Webb Innovator of the Year Award, the Early Career Distinguished Scholar Award, and the Lumley Interdisciplinary Research Award. His professional fellowships include election to the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, the Biomedical Engineering Society, and the American Heart Association.
Beyond his research, he has served on a standing NIH study section, editorial boards, and professional committees. He is committed to rigorous interdisciplinary mentorship and has guided researchers at the undergraduate, graduate, postdoctoral, and visiting-scholar levels.
